Choosing the vivah muhurat: a simple guide for families

Once the rishta is fixed, the next question is the date. What a muhurat is, the seasons families usually avoid, and how to plan around them with your pandit.

When two families agree on a rishta, the happy question that follows is: when? In our samaj the wedding date is not chosen from the calendar alone. The family pandit looks for a shubh muhurat, an auspicious day and time, from the kundlis of the bride and groom and the panchang. This guide explains the idea in simple words, so families can plan with the pandit rather than be surprised by the dates.

What a muhurat is

A muhurat is a period of time considered favourable for an important beginning. For a vivah, the pandit looks at the tithi, the nakshatra, the day of the week and the position of the planets, and matches them with the birth details of the couple. The result is usually a short list of possible dates in a season, each with a time window for the main rituals.

Seasons families usually avoid

The details differ by panchang and by family tradition, so always confirm with your pandit, but many families avoid:

  • Chaturmas, the four months from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi, when weddings traditionally pause
  • Kharmas, about a month around the Sun's entry into Dhanu and again into Meen
  • Periods when Shukra (Venus) or Guru (Jupiter) is considered set (asta)
  • Shraddh paksha, the fortnight for remembering ancestors

Because of these, wedding dates in a year tend to cluster, and good halls and caterers in popular months fill early.

How to plan

  • Give the pandit the birth date, time and place of both the bride and groom
  • Ask for two or three options, not one, so families can choose what suits travel, exams and work
  • Check the dates early with relatives who must attend, especially those coming from abroad
  • Book the venue soon after the date is fixed

Muhurat and kundli milan

The muhurat comes after the rishta is decided; it does not replace the guna milan or the check for Mangal dosha. You can see the guna milan for any two profiles on Pushkarna Match, and run a free kundli milan yourself. Your family pandit remains the final word on both.

After the date is fixed

Once the date is set, profiles on the site can be marked as settled, and families can make a badhai card to share the happy news with the samaj. If you found your match on Pushkarna Match, we would love to hear your story.
